Academic Assessment Lead
Hi! I'm Kara (Ph.D., University of Nevada, Reno), your friendly neighborhood assessment lead.
You may not believe me, but I think I have one of the best jobs at UC Davis. (I really do!) The work of assessment is a natural extension of what I have been doing for almost twenty years: working with faculty, staff, and students to facilitate inquiry into the conditions and practices that produce exemplary learning. I am passionate about culturally-responsive education research, especially when it supports efforts to provide equitable and inclusive opportunities in which all students can thrive academically, personally, and professionally. I get paid to help my colleagues to ask and answer questions about student success and educational effectiveness. What's not to love?
Before coming back to UC Davis as staff (I am a UC Davis alumna), I was a faculty member in curriculum & instruction at New Mexico Highlands University, where I taught courses in assessment, advanced educational research and writing, and K-12 literacy and language arts methods. In addition, I co-chaired the effort to secure accreditation for the College of Education. I have also been visiting faculty for the University of Nevada, School of Medicine, and a lecturer for the University of Nevada, Reno Core Writing Program. My current scholarship interests include the language of assessment; identity and agency in higher educational research; teacher identity; and vocabulary. My favorite questions are:
- “What do you want to know?”
- “How do you know what you know?”
- “Why does knowing [this] matter to you?”
I would love to talk with you about assessment, so don't be a stranger.
