Comparative Literature

  • Demonstrate a comparative understanding of national literature and literary traditions within the context of world literature through close readings of primary texts in their original languages and in translation 

  • Situate texts within their cultural and historical contexts by integrating and analyzing secondary scholarship and criticism

  • Cultivate an understanding of major critical and interpretive methods and apply them to primary literary sources to construct interpretive arguments in the essay form

  • Distinguish and analyze literary forms in the context of major developments in literary history

  • Demonstrate advanced proficiency in at least one literary tradition other than English by successfully completing three upper division courses in that language and literature

  • Develop analytical and critical thinking and research skills through close readings of primary literature and secondary scholarship and criticism.
